Black drum are the heavyweight cousins of redfish, and we get some real bruisers in these waters. Most run 5 to 30 pounds, but 50-pounders turn up now and then. Look for them around oyster beds, mud flats, and channel edges. They love crushed oysters and crabs, so anywhere you find shellfish, you might find drum. These guys really turn on in late winter and early spring when they school up to spawn. That's when you can find big concentrations and land multiple fish. Drum put up a stubborn, dogged fight - no acrobatics, just pure power. Anglers dig 'em for the challenge and tasty fillets from smaller fish. To get in on the action, use fresh cut crab or clams on a fish finder rig. Let it sit on the bottom and be patient - drum aren't known for aggressive strikes. When you feel weight, reel down and set the hook hard. These fish have tough mouths, so don't be shy about it.
Sheepshead are some of the craftiest fish in these waters. They typically run 2 to 8 pounds, with bigger ones pushing 10-12. You'll find them around any hard structure - docks, pilings, jetties, you name it. They're notorious bait stealers with those human-like teeth, perfect for crushing barnacles and crabs. Winter's the prime time for sheepshead fishing here. As the water cools, they school up around structure to spawn. Anglers love targeting them for the challenge and their excellent table fare. The fight isn't spectacular, but getting them to bite can be tricky. For best results, use small hooks with fiddler crabs or pieces of shrimp. Get your bait right up against the structure - that's where they feed. When you feel the slightest tap, set the hook immediately. These guys are masters at stripping bait, so you've got to be quick. A light, sensitive rod helps detect those subtle bites. It's finesse fishing at its finest, and the reward is some of the tastiest fillets you'll ever eat.
Snook are a prized catch around New Smyrna Beach, known for their powerful runs and acrobatic jumps. These sleek predators typically range from 5 to 15 pounds, though trophy fish over 30 pounds aren't unheard of. You'll find snook hanging around mangroves, docks, and bridge pilings, especially during incoming tides. They love ambushing bait in these structure-rich areas. Fall through spring is prime snook season here, with water temps in the 70s being ideal. Anglers get fired up for snook because of their challenging fight and excellent table fare. To land one, try free-lining live pilchards or mullet near structure. A stealthy approach is key - snook spook easily. If you're using artificials, walk-the-dog style topwaters at dawn can produce explosive strikes. Just remember to use a shock leader - snook have razor-sharp gill plates that'll slice through light line in a heartbeat.
Tarpon are the kings of inshore fishing around here, pure and simple. We're talking massive silver missiles up to 6 feet long and pushing 150 pounds. These prehistoric beasts roll through our waters from late spring through fall, following bait schools and warm currents. You'll spot them in coastal waters, inlets, and even up some rivers. They love to cruise just under the surface, gulping air with that distinctive "roll." Watching a school of tarpon coming at you is a heart-pounding experience. When hooked, they put on an airborne show like no other fish. To tangle with tarpon, live bait like mullet or crabs works great. But for the ultimate rush, try sight-casting with flies or artificial lures. Be ready for explosive strikes and long, blistering runs. Just remember, these fish are catch-and-release only - they're too valuable as gamefish to keep. My top tip: when a tarpon jumps, drop your rod tip to give it slack. It'll help keep that prehistoric beast buttoned up.
